Κακαρούντας Θάνος

Ο Αθανάσιος (Θάνος) Κακαρούντας είναι Διπλωματούχος και Διδάκτωρ Ηλεκτρολόγος Μηχανικός και Τεχνολογίας Υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών (1998 και 2004 αντίστοιχα) ενώ κατέχει και MBA από το Ανοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου (2015). Είναι Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, με γνωστικό αντικείμενο «Ενσωματωμένα Υπολογιστικά Συστήματα», στο Τμήμα Πληροφορικής με Εφαρμογές στη Βιοϊατρική, όπου κατέχει τη θέση του Προέδρου του Τμήματος, και επιπλέον είναι Διευθυντής του Εργαστηρίου «Ευφυών Συστημάτων». Παράλληλα είναι ο ιδρυτής και διαχειριστής του ParICT parallel computing node της Σχολής Θετικών Επιστημών, Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας. Συμμετέχει στο Περιφερειακό Συμβούλιο Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας (ΠΣΕΚ) Στερεάς Ελλάδας ως Αντιπρόεδρος. Στο παρελθόν έχει διατελέσει Αναπληρωτής Πρόεδρος της εταιρείας Εθνικό Δίκτυο Υποδομών Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας Α.Ε. (ΕΔΥΤΕ – 2019-2023), Πρόεδρος του Περιφερειακού Συμβουλίου Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας στην Περιφέρεια Στερεάς Ελλάδας (2018-2022) και Διευθυντής Στρατηγικού Σχεδιασμού του Επιστημονικού Πάρκου Πατρών (2007-2008).

Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα περιλαμβάνουν τα Ενσωματωμένα Υπολογιστικά Συστήματα, καθώς επίσης και το σχεδιασμό ψηφιακών ολοκληρωμένων κυκλωμάτων (VLSI), τη σχεδίαση κυκλωμάτων χαμηλής κατανάλωσης και το σχεδιασμό επιταχυντών για ενσωματωμένα συστήματα. Επιπλέον ασχολείται με τα αντικείμενα του Internet of Things, Cybersecurity και Smart City/Smart Home στο επίπεδο του Υλικού (Hardware). Έχει συμμετοχή σε περισσότερα από 30 εθνικά και ευρωπαϊκά ερευνητικά έργα. Έχει δημοσιεύσει περισσότερα από 150 επιστημονικά άρθρα σε διεθνή περιοδικά και συνέδρια, έχει συγγράψει 2 βιβλία, 7 κεφάλαια συλλογικών τόμων και δύο e-books. Η έρευνά του έχει λάβει 1 υποτροφία (για μετα-διδακτορική έρευνα), 3 διεθνή βραβεία, 2 best-paper awards, το IEEE Outstanding Branch Counselor Award (2013) και 4 εθνικά (η ερευνητική ομάδα του), ενώ έχει λάβει περισσότερες από 1400 ετερο-αναφορές.

Είναι Senior Member των IEEE, ACM, και μέλος των ΤΕΕ, ΕμηΠΕΕ. Είναι κριτής εργασιών σε 27 διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και σε περισσότερα από 20 διεθνή επιστημονικά συνέδρια. Έχει διατελέσει μέλος της Οργανωτικής Επιτροπής πλήθους διεθνών συνεδρίων (ενδεικτικά ICCE-Berlin 2022, DESSERT 2022-2023 κ.α.), καθώς και μέλος Technical Program Committee μεγάλου αριθμού διεθνών συνεδρίων. Είναι κριτής στον Πανελλήνιο Διαγωνισμό Ρομποτικής, στον Πανελλήνιο Διαγωνισμό Ρομποτικής Ανοικτού Υλισμικού, μέλος του ομάδας έργου OpenLabs στην Λαμία, και ιδρυτής της δημιουργικής ομάδας A²rTEST. Ανήκει στην οργανωτική ομάδα του TEDxLamia, του Central Hackathon ενώ έχει διατελέσει Mentor δημιουργικών ομάδων σε πολλούς διαγωνισμούς και Ηackathons.

Διετέλεσε Αντιπρόεδρος (6 χρόνια) και Γραμματέας (4 χρόνια) στο Ελληνικό Παράρτημα του IEEE (εθνικός εκπρόσωπος με δικαίωμα ψήφου στο IEEE Region 8 Committee Meeting), ιδρυτικός Πρόεδρος του Ελληνικού Παραρτήματος Καταναλωτικών Ηλεκτρονικών του IEEE, ενώ κατείχε θέση αιρετού μέλους του ΔΣ της ΕμηΠΕΕ (2018-2019). Σήμερα, είναι συν-Πρόεδρος του eGOV Special Technical Committee of the IEEE Computer Society, μέλος του IEEE Consumer Technology Technical Committee – Application-Specific CE for Smart Cities (SMC), και Editor-in-Chief του IEEE Potentials magazine.

Dr. Athanasios Kakarountas (S’98-M’04-SM’12) was born in Lamia city, Greece. He holds a Diploma (1998) and a Ph.D. (2004) in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, and an MBA (2015) from Cyprus Open University. He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Thessaly, holding a position for “Embedded Computing Systems” at the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics. He is the Head of the Department and the Director of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory-iSL. He is also the Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Office in Lamia for the University of Thessaly, and the founder and manager of ParICT, the Central Greece parallel computing  node.

In parallel to his academic career, he has served as the Deputy Chairman of National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET – 2019-2023), the Chair of the Research and Innovation Regional Committee for the Region of Central Greece (2018-2022), the Director for Strategic Development of the Patras Science Park (2007-2008), as a tutor and auditor of the educational material of the Hellenic Open University, and IT expert for the Region of Western Greece and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Greek Government (2007-2008).

His research interests are focused on Computer and Embedded Systems Architecture, VLSI Circuits & Systems Design, Low-power Design and/or Design-for-Test, and Design of Hardware Accelerators for a variety of applications (e.g., image processing, cryptography, medical devices, etc.). Furthermore, he is active in Internet of Things, Cybersecurity, and SmartCity/Smart Home research on Hardware. As a researcher, he has participated in more than 25 research projects funded by EU and the Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology. He has published more than 150 articles in international journals and conference proceedings, and he is the co-author of 2 e-books and 7 chapters in technical books. His research has received more than 1300 citations. He also received 3 international awards, 4 national awards, and the IEEE Outstanding Branch Counselor Award (2013).

He has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2004 (student 1998, Senior Member since 2012), of IET, and a Senior Member of ACM. He is a reviewer in 27 magazines and journals and a permanent reviewer for more than 20 conferences. He has been a member of the Organizing Committee of several IEEE conferences and workshops (e.g., ICCE-Berlin 2022, DESSERT 2022, etc.) and a member of the Technical Program Committee of numerous IEEE conferences and workshops. He is a judge in WRO Hellas, the Open Robotics Contest, and the founder of the creative team A2rTEST. He is also on the TEDxLamia, Central Hackathon’s organizing committee, and has served as a Mentor for various creative teams in Contests and Hackathons.

Dr. Kakarountas has served occasionally as a delegate of Greece at the IEEE Region 8 Committee Meetings since 2008. He has served as Secretary (4 years) and as Section Vice-Chair (6 years, 2022 last year) on the Board of the Greece IEEE Section and the interim Chairman of the IEEE Consumer Technology Society – Greece Chapter. Currently, he is a co-Chair of the eGOV Special Technical Committee of the IEEE Computer Society, a member of the IEEE Consumer Technology Technical Committee – Application-Specific CE for Smart Cities (SMC), and Editor-in-Chief in IEEE Potentials magazine.
